On October 24th, Sonja Bäumel and Helen Blackwell kicked off their interdisciplinary project “What would a microbe say?” at the Science Café event taking place at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery. It has been a very engaging discussion involving a rather diverse and interesting audience including students, academics from different fields, artists, senior citizens, etc.. Lots of interesting reactions and critical questions emerged from the open conversation, which also allowed to clarify that this project is not concerned with utilising art as a visualisation tool for science, but that it aims for the generation of a “real” art/science collaboration, departing from an artistic perspective and touching upon cultural, ethical and esthetical concerns around biotechnological innovations.
